A mountain playground

Queenstown, a place where you can fulfill all your wildest dreams of bungy jumping, jet boating, sky diving, snow boarding...you name it...

The streets are lined with agencies offering you the chance to put your life in danger in any one of hundreds of activities, but we stuck with feeding the animals in Deer Park (well what else can you do in the rain when an avalanche means the bus to Milford Sound was cancelled!). It was one of many NZ Lord of the Rings destinations, but I don't think they did much filming in the rain, and I don't remember any donkeys, ducks or llamas either. It was a very funny rainy day activity, although the wild goats were a little threatening at times...my favourite was a lone yak, whose big brown eyes seemed so so sad. Rick obviously thought I was mad, but enjoyed taking pictures of my attackers!

Aside from feeding the animals, we made sure to explore the bars and pubs of Queenstown, and have a play on the luge at the top of of the gondola...no bungy jumping for us though (skydiving was enough excitement!). The town was full of skiers and snowboarders but it's not really within the budget of scruffy backpackers like ourselves. We did find out, too late, that it is possible to hire big rubber rings to slide down the moutain on, which would have fulfilled some ambition to play in the snow - and presumably caused chaos - but by the time we learnt this we were moving on....
